Open Access Publishing:
The Complete Guide for 2026

Gold OA, green OA, diamond OA, APCs, predatory journals, and Plan S — everything you need to know about open access publishing in 2026.

Open access publishing has transformed from an idealistic aspiration to a complex, commercially driven, and often confusing reality. In 2026, most major funders mandate open access. Most researchers still don't fully understand what that means for their submission strategy.

The Three Main Open Access Models

Gold Open Access: The final published version is immediately freely available under a Creative Commons licence. The author or their institution pays an Article Processing Charge (APC) — typically $1,500–$10,000. Examples: Nature Communications, PLOS ONE, Frontiers, MDPI journals. Green Open Access (Self-Archiving): The author deposits a version of the article in an institutional repository or preprint server. The published version may be behind a paywall. Often embargo periods apply (6–24 months). Examples: arXiv, PubMed Central, institutional repositories. Diamond Open Access: The journal is fully open with no APC — funded by institutions, societies, or governments. Growing in Europe. Examples: many society journals and government-funded publications.

Understanding APCs and Waiver Policies

APC costs vary enormously. Nature family journals charge $5,000–$11,000. Elsevier hybrid journals typically charge $3,000–$4,500. MDPI journals charge $1,200–$2,500. Frontiers journals charge $1,500–$3,000. Most major publishers offer APC waivers for researchers in low-income countries (LICs) — typically automatically applied based on corresponding author country. Always check the journal's waiver policy before deciding on a journal. MeritPeer serves many LIC researchers who qualify for full or partial APC waivers.

Plan S and Funder Mandates in 2026

Plan S, launched by cOAlition S (European research funders), requires that research funded by participating agencies be published immediately in compliant open access venues. By 2026, Plan S compliance is required for: most European Research Council (ERC) grants, Wellcome Trust, Gates Foundation, NIH (USA), and many national research councils. Check your funder's specific OA mandate before submitting — non-compliance can affect future funding.

Identifying and Avoiding Predatory Journals

Predatory journals exploit the OA-APC model by charging fees without providing legitimate peer review or editorial services. Warning signs: aggressive unsolicited email invitations, no verifiable editorial board, no Scopus or WoS indexing, no ISSN or verifiable DOI registration, extremely fast acceptance (days), and no clear peer review process. Check journals against Scopus Source List, Beall's List (archived), and DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) before submitting.
